Thanksgiving Day 2013

I am thankful for many blessings that God has graciously bestowed on our family. Our daughter, Tina and her family live in Virginia and it is especially hard during the holiday season to be away from them, but we look forward to the coming year when we will be able to visit them in the early part of summer for our oldest grand-daughter, Kaitlynn’s graduation from Dental Hygienist School.  Our second oldest granddaughter, Amber, was able to come visit her father and her sister and of course her papa and nana during the Thanksgiving break from her college. We miss them all terribly so we treasure these special times we are together.  I managed to snap a few photos of my son’s two oldest daughters on Thanksgiving, also my daughter sent a couple photos of to share with us on Thanksgiving Day this was especially nice as we were unable to visit this year.

This photo was taken in my scrapbook room showing the girls some of the things I recently made while waiting on  family members to arrive to sit down to Thanksgiving dinner.

My Vintage Sewing Kit

I saw a cute Vintage sewing kit on Pinterest that gave me the inspiration to create a sewing kit to co-ordinate with my newly refurbished train case.  I used scraps of the fabrics from that project. I still have to put a button or snap closure on the front lower edge. 

The bottom has a pocket to hold small spools of thread and buttons.

A while back I purchased an old vintage train case at a yard sale.  I paid $5.00 for the case.  I had always admired my friend June’s train case that she had refurbished several years ago and wanted to do one for myself.  I definitely will be on the lookout for more bargain buys at local thrift stores and yard sales for more cases.  I had a lot of fun doing this project.  I certainly found this a challenge, however, I learned a lot with this one hopefully it will be easier next time, lol!!!

These are few of my before and after photos.   I know some of the photos may seem repetitious, however, I tried to show before and after views at different angles. I will post more of the finished views as I didn’t take as many photos during the process of restoring the train case.  I  was happy that the original mirror was still intact.  The mirror has some wear, but that just gives it character.

I wiped with wet soft cloth as I went along to give it the shabby chic look.

I lined the inside with vintage print roses pink and cream fabric purchased from

Hobby Lobby, trimmed edges with satin picot edge ribbon.

Friends and Sharing

My friend Paula, shared laces and pearls with me.  I was overwhelmed at the amount of pearls and lace she shared with me.  We had so much fun dividing and untangling a huge amount of lace and pearls. I wished I had taken more photos.  My granddaughter managed to snap this  photo.  I appreciate my friend so much not just for what she shares materialistic, but the support for so many things in my life, she is caring, unselfish, go the extra mile for you friend and so much, much,  more.  I  have so much fun when we get the opportunity  to get together to create, or just hang out.

Vintage Handmade Flowers

I have been having fun creating these shabby chic/vintage style handmade flowers.  I used lots of scraps using some of my vintage laces, muslin, satin and crocheted doilies and vintage style buttons and flat back pearls for flower centers.

As of late, I have seen many different styles of vintage wall-hangings on You Tube and Pinterest.  I pondered this idea around in my mind for several months and gathered countless supplies before I sat down and played with them all and this is what I came up with.  I just wish I had more wall space to create more of them.  I have been so inspired with all the examples from one particular site I have saved it to my favorites and follow her site on Pinterest.  I believe the name is cottagedreams.blogspot.com Another one of my favorite blogs is:

I enjoy repurposing old vintage lace doilies and laces and fabrics. 

 

Marty’s Book of Lace

I had seen on YouTube several tutorials on making a book of laces, one was ribbon holder, however, knowing my feel and love for vintage laces, I wanted to make a book to hold some of my vintage lace.  These are just a few of my laces that I will probably never use, mostly hoard.  I wanted a way to display them so I set out to make my take on this idea.  This book was a lot of fun to make.  I didn’t have a pattern just created it as I went along.  I don’t really have dimensions just whatever worked is what I did.

My latest addition to my scrap room is this antique Singer sewing table that belonged to my aunt,  the sewing machine was in very poor condition so I didn’t keep it.  It broke my heart to discard it.  I did, however keep some of the parts to use in future projects.  The Singer metal name label, some handles, etc. 

I did redo the cabinet drawers to use for storage of vintage lace. The table top is made from  recycled shelving and the front trim is the original trim from the front of the original cabinet (oak, rounded corner trim) of vintage sewing machine table. My husband spray painted the cast iron bottom black.  I painted the top white and did shabby chic effects to the painted surface of the table top and drawers.  I was also able to salvage the decorative front facer board from the old cabinet to place on the  front of the new table top.

I am enjoying having my sewing machine at my fingertips. When,  I see something unique on different blogs and and or Pinterest I feel the urge to bring out my machine and sew.

These are my latest creations: Purse made from vintage laces and muslin, using seam binding ribbon to embellish, and metal charms also a small tote that houses my Viking sewing cartridges.
